African army ants (Dorylus sp.) on the march. The central lane of ants is carrying larvae. All army ants are nomadic, moving on when they have cleared an area of food. The queen and the larvae will be housed in a temporary nest. The rest of the colony is made up of worker and soldier ants, and can be several million strong. The worker ants forage for food, and are protected by the soldier ants. They mostly hunt arthropod prey, usually other insects, leaving chemical trails to guide a column of ants to the food source. As many as 100,000 arthropods may be consumed per day. Some ant columns are over half a kilometre in length. Photographed in Ghana | |
