Winged ant. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an unidentified winged ant (family Formicidae). Only the male and mature female have wings (centre left & right). The male mates with the female on a marriage flight, and then dies. The female bites off her wings and starts a nest. The ant senses movement and taste using a pair of antennae mounted on its head. Its mouthparts (centre) consist of serrated mandibles that deliver powerful cutting bites. The three pairs of legs (lower centre) are attached to the thorax. The ant is a social insect that can form colonies of several million. Magnification: x30 at 6x7cm size | |
