Bee feeding on nectar. An unidentified species of bee feeding on the nectar of a lavender flower,Lavandula sp. The bee's long proboscis can be seen dipping deep into the flower to suck up the sugary nectar. Bees are dependent on nectar as a source of energy, and on pollen as a protein source. During their food-gathering flights bees will transfer pollen between flowers of the same species, which allows cross-pollination. Bees are,in fact, the most important pollinating insects. Flowering plants such as lavender have developed coloured flowers which produce scent and nectar because they attract pollinating insects | |
