Mosquito larvae. Macrophotograph of mosquito larvae (Anopheles sp.) underwater. These are anopheline mosquitoes, many of which transmit the disease malaria to humans. Anopheline larvae lie parallel to the water's surface (top) when at rest (for example, upper left and right). These larvae are aquatic, hatching from eggs laid by the female on the surface of the water. They breathe through a siphon (tube) at the end of the abdomen and feed on protozoa and other minute organisms. The adult mosquito emerges after a period of pupation. Magnification unknown | |
