Mosquito pupae. Macrophotograph of pupae of the mosquito Anopheles gambiae underwater. The aquatic larvae of this mosquito pupate underwater, forming a hard cuticle (light brown) around themselves as they develop into the adult stage (black). When the adult is fully formed,it begins to swallow air through the breathing tube (one seen at upper right) that forms part of the cuticle. This increases the pressure within the pupa, which causes the cuticle to split, allowing the adult to emerge. A. gambiae females feed on vertebrate blood before laying eggs. They are the most important vector for the transmission of malaria to humans. Magnification unknown | |
