Head of a mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the head of a female yellow fever mosquito,Aedes punctor. Like other insects, the mosquito has compound eyes, consisting of many facets. Also seen here is the ribbon-like labrum,a modified stylet which forms the food channel. The labrum is seen above its protective sheath. The sheath is used to puncture the skin of the mosquito's host to allow it to ingest blood. Many species of mosquito are vectors of blood-borne diseases. Magnification x40 at 6x4.5cm size | |
