A larva of the mosquito Anopheles stephansi. The larva hatches from a floating spindle-shaped egg and floats horizontally just below the surface of the water. The eighth body segment posseses a respiratory siphon through which it breathes. The mouthparts bear a comb of hairs which beat through the water filtering out algal spores, scattered pollen, bacteria and other microorganisms. When disturbed the larva flees rapidly from the surface,to return later by snake-like movements of its body | |
