| False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a male yellow fever mosquito,Aedes aegypti,with the compound eyes coloured red. The female of the species is the primary vector of the yellow fever virus,which it transmits while feed- ing on human blood. The female needs blood meals for her reproductive cycle. The male feeds on fruit and nectar. The antennae of the male are more feathery than the female's. The proboscis (lower centre) holds the stylets: fine piercing and sucking tubes. A. aegypti lives close to humans and lays its eggs in water that collects in discarded rubbish such as tins,bottles or tyres. Magnification: x30 at 35mm size,x60 at 6x7cm size.
