False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a female yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti). Only the female of the species identified by the relatively sparse hairs on her antennae, sucks the blood of humans & thereby transmits the virus that causes yellow fever. Much of the mosquito's head is covered with tiny hairs & petal-like structures, the function of which are uncertain. The begining of the proboscis is seen at the bottom of the micrograph. Note also the large compound eyes. Magnification: X 45 at 35mm size. Original is BW print Z341/07M | |
