Hoverfly larva mouthparts. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mouthparts (yellow) of a hoverfly (sub-family Syrphinae) larva. The mouthparts are used to bite into the underside of its prey and then feed on the internal fluids (haemolymph). Members of this sub- family are known as the aphid-eaters. The larvae are ferocious carnivores that feed on aphids (sub-family Homoptera),a common pest of flower, vegetable and fruit crops. As such hoverflies are used for biological pest control by organic farmers. Magnification: x250 at 6x7cm size | |
