Hoverfly larva mouthparts. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mouthparts (pink) of a hoverfly (subfamily Syrphinae) larva. The mouthparts are used to bite into the underside of its prey and then feed on the internal fluids (haemolymph). Members of this subfamily are known as the aphid-eaters. The larvae are ferocious carnivores that feed on aphids (family Aphididae),a common pest of flower, vegetable and fruit crops. As such hoverflies are used for biological pest control by organic farmers. Magnification: x250 at 6x7cm size | |
