Maggots. A bowl containing a sterile culture of maggots of the greenbottle fly Lucilia sericata. Maggots, more commonly of the blowfly or blue- bottle fly,may be used in the treatment of septic wounds. In the 1930's scientists discovered that infected wounds were aided in healing when accidentally infected by maggots. The maggots would eat away at all the dead tissue leaving healthy tissue alone. The discovery of modern therapies such as antibiotics to cure infections has made the use of maggots obsolete. Nevertheless, sterile cultures of maggots may still be used in severe skin infections when all other methods have failed | |
