Ectopic eye in mutant fruit fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the head of a mutant fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster with a small ectopic eye in place of an antenna (lower centre). The ectopic eye consists of a number of perfectly formed eye facets. The mutation was produced by inducing expression of a gene called eyeless in parts of the developing fly's body that would not normally express the gene. (The gene is so-called because mutations in it produce flies with no eyes.) Eyeless is thought to act as a master control gene early on in developmental pathways.
