Flesh fly on glass. Macrophotograph of a gray flesh fly Sarcophaga carnaria, standing on glass. At the tip of each foot are two pads or cushions called pulvilli which enable the fly to adhere to smooth surfaces such as glass. It is uncertain whether miniature tubes covering the foot pads secrete a glue,or whether physical effects of surface tension account for the adhesion. Positioned on the side of the head are two large compound eyes (red); hairs or setae cover the fly's head, body and legs, and may be used for touch. Sarcophaga carnaria is related to the bluebottle fly and like them is a domestic pest | |
