Housefly head. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a housefly,Musca domestica. The head is dominated by two large compound eyes, each containing about 4000 separate image-forming facets (ommatidia). The tiny facets are cone-shaped in structure consisting of a lens,a crystalline cone and an array of light- sensitive cells. The two elongated structures lying between the eyes are the fly's antennae. The feathery structure on one antenna is a sensory organ known as an arista. Hairs on the head also act as sensory organs. The mouthparts are situated underneath the head and are not clearly seen in this image. Magnification: x24 at 6x4.5cm size | |
