Longhorn beetle. Native to South America, this species of beetle (Batus barbicornis) grows up to 4 centimetres in length. The larvae of this beetle feed on wood, and cause great damage to trees. It is a severe pest of tree plantations. The adult bores a hole in a tree and lays eggs. After hatching, each larva feeds on the tree before pupating. The newly-emerged adult then chews through the bark and emerges. This process severely weakens the tree, and leads to a large loss of sap | |
