Head of ladybird. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a ladybird beetle (Coccinella sp.). This insect's large compound eyes (orange) are seen at upper left and right. Its mouthparts are seen below the end of its head at centre right. Ladybirds are fast-moving and voracious predators, feeding mainly on aphids. For this reason they are encouraged by gardeners and farmers,as aphids are a serious pest of some crops, fruits and flowers. The characteristic patterns of spots and colours on a ladybird's wing covers serves to warn potential predators that the beetle itself is inedible. Magnification unknown | |
