Ladybird metamorphosis (fourth of 6 images). Macrophotograph of a seven-spot ladybird beetle,Coccinella septempunctata, metamorphosing. Metamorphosis is the transformation of a creature from an immature form (larva) into an adult. Here the adult form has emerged from its pupa. The pupa was the dormant stage in which it changed body shape. The beetle's body is soft after emerging from the pupa and it is pumping blood into its wings (white,at back of body) to expand them before they harden. The beetle's orange elytra do not yet have the black spots associated with ladybirds. (See also Z330/222-224 & Z330/226-227) | |
