Ladybird metamorphosis (third of 6 images). Macrophotograph of a seven-spot ladybird beetle,Coccinella septempunctata, metamorphosing. Metamorphosis is the transformation of a creature from an immature form (larva) into an adult. Here the adult form is emerged from its pupa. The pupa was the dormant stage in which the ladybird changed body shape from a larva to an adult. The beetle's body is soft after emerging from the pupa and it will have to wait for its external skeleton to harden. The beetle's orange elytra do not yet have the black spots associated with ladybirds. (See also Z330/222-223 & Z330/225-227) | |
