Stag beetle. X-ray of a male stag beetle Lucanus cervus (family: Lucanidae),seen in ventral view. Males of this large beetle have enormous mandibles (at top) which often carry serrated teeth. These enlarged, hard "antlers" are used as a weapon in battles with other male rivals. The mandibles of the female are much smaller. Behind the mandibles can be seen the antennae; the head has a pair of eyes; the thorax behind the head is broad and well armoured. Some 800 species of stag beetles occur in all parts of the world and their larvae, which develop in rotting wood, often need several years to mature | |
