Woodworm beetle. Coloured Scanning Elecctron Micrograph of an adult woodworm beetle,Anobium punctatum. The compound eyes with their numerous rounded facets can be seen. In front of each eye the segmented antennae are attached. Both adults & larvae attack wood, forming networks of burrows, but it is the larvae which cause the most damage. Eggs are laid on the surface of dead wood, including beams & rafters, timber, furniture and dead trees, and the larvae hatch out and begin to eat their way inwards. The damage can be extensive without being noticeable; a few holes on the surface reveal little of the network of tunnels inside. Magnification: x90 at 5x7cm size. x300 at 10x8ins | |
