Fast flash photograph of an adult Desert Locust Schistocerca gregaria,in flight. This is the species that forms the devastating flying swarms of locusts. Under conditions of overcrowding, the nymphs undergo a 'phase' change in colouration and behaviour. The green of the solitary phase gives way to the bright yellow and black of the gregarious phase. The nymphs mass together in enormous numbers, becoming highly excited and set off in a purposeful manner devouring all vegetation in their path. The adults inherit this excitable behaviour, forming enormous swarms | |
