Rose aphid nymph. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Rose aphid nymph Macrosiphon rosae feeding on a rose leaf. This winged nymph is an immature form of the adult aphid. Known as plant lice, aphids are specialised plant feeders that suck the sap from plant veins. At left is the head with long antennae, compound eye (red),and a tube-like sucking mouthpart or proboscis. The proboscis is seen about to penetrate the leaf surface. Three pairs of walking legs are visible; at the posterior end are two short tubes called cornicles which secrete pheromones and waxes. Macrosiphon rosae feeds on the stems and leaves of domestic roses. Magnification x36 at 5x7cm size. Magnification: x90 at 12x16cm size | |
