Cicada nymph. The nymph stage of a cicada, family Cicadidae, crawling on soil. Adult females lay their eggs in tree bark. The wingless young, called nymphs, hatch out and drop to the ground. They work themselves into the soil using their forelegs which,as can be seen here, are adapted for digging. Feeding on the sap of tree roots, they slowly mature. This may take many years, depending on the species. Eventually they emerge and climb up the tree trunk where they moult. The adults live for about a month during which they feed, mate and lay eggs. The males produce loud clicking sounds with special organs on the abdomen | |
