False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a green peach aphid,Myzus persicae,on a leaf of Marvel of Peru,Mirabilis jalapa. This aphid winters on peach trees, migrating to other plants in summer. It is an economic pest when it infests crops such as potatoes. It is also a carrier of plant virus diseases, which it transmits while feeding on the sugary substances in leaves. It inserts its stylet into the leaf, seeking the sugar-carrying cells in leaf veins; the horizontal cells in the foreground are part of a vein. The tubes on the aphid's back are siphons for sending pheromone signals. This specimen is a parthenogen- etic female.Mag: x35 at 6x4.5cm,x22 at 35mm size. * Purply-red,yellow & green version * | |
