Termite mound. Mound made by termites of the species Nasutitermes exitiosus. Termites are social insects living in large colonies that comprise one or more queens of relatively large size,a few smaller kings and numerous smaller soldiers. Termite mounds may be more than 7m high in the air and they also extend underground. The whole structure is honeycombed with chambers and passages. The walls of the mound are composed of soil and wood particles cemented together with the saliva of the insects. The mounds are rich in air spaces that provide the right amount of oxygen necessary for the growth of some fungal species which represent part of the insects food | |
