Termite mound. Termites or white ants, belong to the tropical order Isoptera. They are social insects living in large colonies that comprise one or more queens of relatively large size,a few smaller kings and numerous smaller soldiers. Termite mounds may be more than 7m high in the air and they also extend underground. The whole structure is honeycombed with chambers and passages. The walls of the mound are composed of soil particles cemented together with the saliva of the insects. The mounds are rich in air spaces that provide the right amount of oxygen necessary for the growth of some fungal species which represent part of the insects food | |
