Zeus bugs (Phoreticovelia disparata). Male Zeus bug riding on the back of a female. A novel form of nuptial feeding was found in these insects by Swedish and Australian scientists in 2003. The females secrete a substance from glands on their backs. Male Zeus bugs ride on the females' backs and feed on the secretions during mating. In all other insects studied, nuptial feeding involves the male supplying the female with food. Zeus bugs are tropical semi-aquatic insects from eastern Australia.
