Bed bug. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a bed bug (Cimex lectularius). It has a rounded compound eye (pink) on each side of its head and an antenna protruding from each side of its mouth. A piercing mouthpart (stylet, centre) is used to penetrate human skin and to suck blood. A regular diet of blood is necessary for bed bugs to reach maturity. The bed bug's saliva causes itchy swellings on the skin. These swellings are usually only detected after the bed bug has retreated to its day-time resting place such as on mattresses, floors,or furniture | |
