Bed bug. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the head of a bed bug,Cimex lectularius. Seen on the head (at centre) is a rounded compound eye,two antennae (at top),and a stylet mouthpart (at lower left). The long stylet is a nib-shaped structure used to pierce human skin and to suck blood. A regular diet of blood is necessary for bed bugs to reach maturity. Several times in succession, during their development, bed bugs bite their human host producing swellings on the skin. These swellings are usually only detected after the bed bug has retreated to its day-time resting place such as on mattresses, floors,or furniture. Magnification: x33 at 5x7cm size. x55 at 4x5ins | |
