Mayfly. Light micrograph of an unidentified mayfly (order: Ephemeroptera). Black nerve cords are seen running along the body from the region of the rounded compound eye. Two fan-like projections on the back are the gills. The mayfly spends most of its life in the larval form (anywhere from several months to 2-3 years) living and feeding in an aquatic environment. The adult, however, lives on the wing only from a few hours to a few days. Its primary function is to reproduce. The name mayfly is somewhat misleading since they can be found near bodies of water from April through October,in warm regions the year round. Magnification: x6 at 35mm size | |
