Madagascan giant hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa) on a human hand. These insects are popular as pets and school exhibits. They measure up to 9 centimetres in length and are wingless. They make a loud hissing noise by expelling air from holes (spiracles) in the abdomen. Males hiss when fighting with other males,to attract females and when alarmed. Females hiss only when alarmed.
