| Scanning electron micrograph of a foot of the American cockroach,Periplaneta americana. As a fast runner and agile climber,the three pairs of thoracic legs on the cockroach are well adapted. Here,terminal segments of the leg are spined for protection,and have sensory hairs. They are covered in a hard exoskeleton; internal muscles move the segments separately. A double claw is at the end near a foot pad,both for grip. Knobbed segments behind the claw also assist grip when the cockroach crouches. Periplaneta americana can fly,and has become a widespread household pest partly because of its sense and speed to escape capture. Magnification: x215 at 8x10 inch size | |
