Body louse. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the blood-sucking human body louse,Pediculus humanus corporis. At centre right is the head of the louse, with its antennae, simple eye (at centre) and biting mouthparts. The three pairs of legs terminate in a curved claw for gripping (lower centre). Body lice live and lay eggs on clothing and visit the human body only to feed. They infest people who rarely change their clothes and who have poor hygiene. Lice can transmit diseases such as typhus and relapsing fever. Infestations of lice cause pediculosis,an intense itching rash which may result in bacterial infection.
