Strongyloidiasis. Scanning electron micrograph of human duodenum infected with the nematode worms Strongyloides stercoralis. These parasites infest the human intestine & produce larvae which pass out in the faeces. Infection is typically through the skin: larvae may enter skin around the anus to begin a new infection cycle; in the tropics they may penetrate the skin of barefoot walkers. Larvae in the lungs may cause pneumonia or asthma, intestinal worms cause diarrhoea or there may be secondary disease. AIDS patients may develop strongyloidiasis, particularly the pneumonic form.
