Mouth of Enoplid nematode worm. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the wide-open mouth of a marine Enoplid nematode. This tiny worm lives as meiofauna in wet beach sand. Its mouth is fringed with tentacles, and internally can be seen three lips. The elongated body has circular ridges and bristle-like setae used to assist in movement. Nematodes are found in large numbers in almost all environments, some parasitic in blood,to others living in freshwater. This Enoplid is specialised to live in seawater between grains of sand. It is a member of the important meiofauna ecosystem that helps clean beach sand of bacteria and pollutants. Magnification: x1300 at 6x6cm size. x3,150 at 4x4ins | |
