Nematode worm curled around a grass stem. It is a so-called threadworm,or "eelworm" because of its snake-like movements. This unidentified species, about 10cm long, lives and lays its eggs in the soil; the young live inside the bodies of beetles and other soil insects until they are adult. There are some 10,000 species of nematode, which are found in extraordinary large numbers in almost all habitats of the world. There may be 100,000 such worms in one rotting apple; or 20 million in one square metre of top soil. Many nematodes are parasitic, some on humans, one such (Dracunculus medinensis) lives under the human skin and can grow 4 metres in length | |
