Light micrograph of the larval stage of the nema- tode worm,Toxascaris leonina. Nematodes are threadlike and elongated roundworms, the posterior end of the body is more pointed than the anterior. They are a large class of mainly parasitic worms which infect both plants and animals. Related to Toxascaris leonina from Egypt (shown here) is the Maw-worm,Ascaris lumbricoides. The Maw-worm has infected humans at least since the ancient Egypt- ians. It's not known whether Toxascaris is a human pathogen. However, this larval stage would hatch from eggs, and preceed an adult stage. Hookworm and threadworm are other nematode infections found in humans. Magnification: unknown | |
