They are a large class of worms that consist mainly of parasites,though there are free-living freshwater and terrestrial forms. The parasitic forms infect both plants and animals. Closely related to Toxocara vitalorum (shown here) is Toxocara canis which causes toxocariasis: a disease transmitted from infected dogs to children.
