Light micrograph of an egg & first larval stage of the dog roundworm Toxocara canis,the cause of toxocariasis in man (a parasitic infestation caused by oral contact with material contaminated by eggs deposited in dog faeces). The larvae migrate around the body destroying various tissues; the liver may enlarge & the lungs inflame. Symptoms include fever,joint & muscle pains,vomiting & convulsions. Larvae may lodge in the retina of the eye,causing inflammation & granuloma. The worm is widely distributed throughout the world & primarily affects children.
