Light micrograph of the Antarctic species of rotifer Philodina gregaria. This red coloured rotifer survives the winter in cyst form & hatches out when pools & lakes of meltwater form during the austral summer. It reproduces in vast numbers, sometimes colouring the floor of a lake red. The head of the rotifer (top right) is Y- shaped with paired ciliary organs forming the two arms of the Y. These organs are covered in fine hairs,or cilia, the motion of which draws particles of food such as algae into the mouth. Rotifers are usually freshwater, though some marine species are known.
