Gorgonian fan coral (Gorgonia sp.,orange) or sea fan on a coral reef. A tunicate or sea squirt is seen at upper left. The gorgonian has a flat, branched structure formed by a colony of coral- like organisms for protection and support. It is orientated to face the prevailing current, and the tiny organisms (not seen) feed by filtering plankton from the water using feathery tentacles. Photographed off Sulawesi,Indonesia | |
