Sea fan coral (Subergorgia mollis, brown). A sea fan is a colony of tiny coral organisms (polyps),which build this rocky structure around themselves for protection and support. The fan is orientated to present a large surface area to the prevailing current, allowing the coral organisms to filter plankton from the water. Also seen is a golden damselfish (Amblyglyphidodon aureus). This fish is found on the outer edges of coral reefs, near to gorgonian corals. Photographed in the Andaman Sea,Thailand | |
