Plumose sea anemones. View of plumose sea anemones,Metridium senile. This sea anemone is comprised of a cylindrical body which is unable to support itself out of water. It attaches itself with one end of its body, whilst the other end has a central mouth surrounded by tentacles. These tentacles are armed with stinging cells which paralyse the small marine animals, such as plankton,it feeds on. The plumose sea anemone also feeds on jellyfish that strong currents propel towards it. The tentacles transport the immobilised prey to the mouth. Photographed in Nova Scotia,Canada | |
