Cryptosporidium protozoa. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Cryptosporidium sp. (centre left) on the surface of the intestines. This is the protozoan's sporozoite stage, which attaches to the intestinal mucosa before penetrating the epithelial cells. This causes the disease cryptosporidiosis, with symptoms including impaired digestion, diarrhoea and fever. It is contracted by drinking water or eating food that has been in contact with the faeces of an infected individual. In immunocompromised individuals, such as those suffering from AIDS,the disease can be fatal. Magnification: x2400 at 6x7cm size | |
