Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a tissue cyst formed by the sporozoan Toxoplasma gondii, the cause of toxoplasmosis in humans. The cyst contains numerous infective cells known as bradyzoites; humans can become infected through eating undercooked meat contaminated with these cysts. Infection also occurs via the oocysts excreted in cat's faeces. The disease is especially dangerous to pregnant women; transmission to the developing foetus can cause stillbirth, neonatal death & congenital deformities. Cats are the definitive host, but all mammals may become infected. Mag: x4000 at 8x10ins,x580 at 35mm size | |
