False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a human red blood cell infected with the malaria parasite,a protozoan of the genus Plasmodium. The light-edged blotches seen within the cell are Plasmodium cells known as merozoites, produced by asexual division, schizogony. The individual meroz- oites are ready to be released to infect other red blood cells, the synchronised release of which throughout the body results in short bouts of shivering, fever and sweating characteristic of the disease. The sexual phase of the Plasmodium life cycle takes place within the digestive glands of the malaria mosquito. Mag: x6,300 at 35mm size | |
