Radiolaria. Light micrograph of radiolaria,a type of marine protozoa. Radiolaria build hard skeletons (tests) made of silica around themselves as they float in seas with other plankton. They extend their protoplasm as pseudopodia (false feet) through pores in their test to feed on tiny organisms. Radiolaria can change their density in order to vary their depth. Large numbers of radiolarian skeletons litter the sea bed, becoming fossilised to form minerals like flint. Phase contrast. Magnification unknown | |
