Light micrograph (Nomarski) of Amoeba sp (0. 2- 0. 5mm in diametre) regurgitating a blue-green algae,Oscillatoria sp. The track through the cytoplasm where the algae passed is clearly visible. Amoeba collect food & move through their environment by means of pseudopodia,or false feet. Pseudopodia are changes in the outline of the cytoplasm forming the cell body. It flows outward in a rapid stream forming a fingerlike extension. As a mechanism for collecting food,it flows around & engulfs small organisms & then is reabsorbed into the cell body, where digestion takes place. Amoeba may have many,or a single, pseudopodia.
