Blepharisma protozoan. Light micrograph of a ciliate protozoan Blepharisma americanum. It has a strong undulating membrane, seen here as a blue structure at the narrow end of the organism, which is used for feeding and movement. Blepharisma feeds on bacteria and tiny food particles. When feeding conditions are good it grows to an enormous size and these giants are sometimes seen to feed on their normal-sized relatives. Magnificaton: x125 at 35mm size | |
